And, a lot of people want to know what Numinosity means. Here are the definitions I included in the book:
- Of or relating to a numen; supernatural.
- Filled with or characterized by a sense of a supernatural presence: a numinous place.
- Spiritually elevated; sublime.
- Arousing spiritual or religious emotions
- Mysterious or awe-inspiring — Latin numen, divine will
The term numinosity isn’t too well-known beyond the academic study of religion and anthropology. In a sense numinosity is like the more familiar term luminosity. But numinosity refers to a subtle, spiritual light instead of an outwardly visible light such as the luminosity of the moon. While numinosity and luminosity may coexist, they remain somehow different.
Something numinous has a strong religious quality, suggesting the presence of a divine power. When you enter a temple, church, or mosque, you might feel as though you’ve entered a numinous space.
Numinous comes from the Latin numin- meaning “divine power.” This word also comes from numen, a word used to describe the spirit or divine power characteristic of a thing or place. However, you don’t have to be in a strictly religious environment to experience something numinous; you might see the beauty of a painting or the melody of a song as numinous — if they communicate a spiritual vibe.
Definition from vocabulary.com
If you stop and think, you can probably recall a moment in your life when something was so overwhelming awe inspiring, you felt a flicker of the divine.
When I was about 8 I had such a moment. My family lived on a 62 acre farm in Blanchard, Louisiana. My father and mother owned four houses: our house plus three rent houses. My house sat on the main road leading from Blanchard into Texas. We had a huge front yard and across the road was a vast undeveloped forest. Our house had only two bedrooms and when my sister got married and moved out, I finally got my own bedroom at the age of 7.
My bedroom was on the front right hand corner of our house overlooking the front yard. There were several huge trees in the front yard. Once in mid spring, we had the windows open for the cool night air. We only had one air conditioner in the living room. Our windows were the old fashion heavy wooden panes with glass that was slightly undulating.
One morning I awoke just before dawn. I turned over in my huge bed and tucked my elbows beneath me looking out the open window at my front yard. There was a mist on the dew covered grass and in the distant shadows still lingering under the trees I saw the green flickering lights of fireflies. In the huge tree in front of the front porch I heard birds chirping so quietly their voices barely echoed across the yard. Dew dripped from the wisteria vine the encircled the tree like a huge python. Daffodils and spider-lilies had sprung up across the yard. The cool, moist air was alive with these fragrances. A deer stepped out of the woods across the road and sauntered into the front yard followed by two small spotted fawns. A rabbit sat nibbling the fresh grass.
Something came over me and I felt as if time stood still and I was pulled into a moment of absolute peace and contentment where I could feel the design of God unfolding in front of me. It would be decades before I identified that experience as a “numinous” experience.
Have you ever had such an experience? If so, share them with each other. In this time of quarantine and restless paranoia and fear, we could use a quiet, peaceful touch of the Master’s hand; a reminder that God is still in control and all will be well!
While on a flight to meet with the mysterious “Max”, Jonathan Steel is the only survivor when his passenger airplane crashes in the Swiss Alps. He is accused of being a terrorist and is placed under house arrest. Meanwhile, Josh’s new friend Olivia possesses a set of virtual reality goggles called the “Third Eye Interface”. Soon, they are pursued by assassins bent on obtaining the goggles and have to flee the country. Their plans are interrupted when they are both abducted by a dangerous person from Josh’s past. Max helps Jonathan escape house arrest and sends him on a mission to London to rescue Josh and Olivia. Once there, Jonathan learns he must enter the virtual world of “Numinocity” created by Dr. Sultana Thakkar, a renowned neuroscientist who is also in league with the eighth demon. Her plan is to use the Third Eye Interface to enslave millions in Europe with her virtual world. Josh and his friends must enter Numinocity and stop the eighth demon before she enslaves millions in demonic possession.
Today, the ebook version is available at most book sellers. The print version will be available on May 20th and you can preorder it now. Above is the cover of the book. I hope my readers enjoy this journey into the unknown. Thanks for following me. More to come in the near future about “The 8th Demon”. You can visit my author page on Amazon here.
The cover is done. I’ll share it with my readers on Monday. For today, here is a photo. This is the Lyceum theater in London and it is featuring the Broadway production of “The Lion King”. Lots of construction is going on about the theater.
On the far side of the entrance there is a small, winding alleyway and at night being down that alleyway can be a bit dicey. It certainly was for Jonathan Steel and a grisly crime he witnessed sometime in his past.
A flashback of that night changes everything for Jonathan.
Did you know you could once ride a dog sled at the “top of Europe?” Jungfraujoch is an amazing area in the Swiss Alps where, during winter, visitors have a dozen sports to enjoy. The top of that mountain is just a train ride away.
In “The 8th Demon”, there are still dog sleds to be found on the top of this mountain. It is because of these dog sleds that Jonathan Steel was able to survive a horrendous tragedy. It won’t be long before we find out all about that “tragedy”.
Ten days to two weeks for the final book cover and then “The 8th Demon: A Wicked Numinosity”, the 6th book in the Chronicles of Jonathan Steel will be on its way into my readers’ hands.
For today’s photograph, there is an open window into a top floor room in a building on the Seine River in Paris, France. This little open window leads into a small apartment. In that small apartment a stranger is fighting for his life. Who is he? Who is he fighting? What will be his fate?
It won’t be long, now.
In the image below, you can see what Jonathan Steel saw during a flashback vision recounted in my upcoming book, “The 8th Demon: A Wicked Numinosity”. In the photo, you can see Parliament and Big Ben from one of the “capsules” of the London Eye. The London Eye is a large Ferris wheel type structure giving a bird’s eye view of London, England.
Why was Jonathan Steel on the London Eye and who was he with? You won’t have to wait much longer. The final manuscript is finished and the book is laid out ready for publication. It will take a couple of weeks to complete the cover art and then I will release the book before the end of May.
